Manchester Terrier
Overview
The Manchester Terrier is a breed that originated in the United Kingdom. It is a purebred small dog. It looks very much like a small Doberman Pinscher, although it is not related in any way to that breed. There are two varieties of the Manchester Terrier: the Toy and the Standard. The only differences between the two are the size and the type of ears that they have.
The height of the Toy dog is from 10 to 12 inches and its weight is 6 to 8 pounds. The height of the Standard dog is 15 to 16 inches and its weight is 17 to 18 pounds. The Toy always has erect ears and the Standard can have either button or erect ears. Its colors are totally black or black with tan. The litter size is from 2 to 4 puppies. It costs from $600 to $1,000 US dollars.
This dog was bred in the mid 1800's in Manchester, England. At that time there were two popular sports: hunting rabbits with small dogs and hunting rats with small dogs. The breeders at the time wanted a dog that would excel at both games.
When they crossed a Black and Tan Terrier with Whippets they bred the Manchester Terrier. It became very popular, and in the Victorian Era men used the Standard Manchester Terrier asd a companion and women wanted a smaller version of that breed for themselves. Then the Toy Manchester Terrier was bred.
Temperament
The temperament of the Manchester Terrier is active, alert, devoted, discerning, quiet, loyal, and intelligent. It makes a good house pet. It is a very adaptable dog, apartment friendly, cat friendly, and child friendly. It learns quickly and responds well to patient training. It is well natured and extremely loyal dog that enjoys being with people.
It requires attention and it is not recommended to leave it alone constantly. Male dogs do not get along very well when they are put together, but females do get along well among themselves. They are not very shy or aggressive and they can get along with other dogs.
Although this breed can have fun indoors without any problems, it is better to have a garden because this dog has a lot of energy. It does not need too much exercise. It is recommended to have large fences in the garden because this dog likes to get out by either digging under it or jumping over it, despite its small size.
The Manchester Terrier is a great watchdog. It barks very loudly, despite its small size. It is very protective and needs early socialization so that it doesn't become skittish with strangers.
Lifespan
Its life span is from 14 to 16 years. In general, this breed is very healthy.
Shedding
The Manchester Terrier is very easily maintained. It sheds occasionally and it requires minimal grooming (brushing once a week and bathing when it is necessary). The ears should be cleaned regularly to avoid infections. It needs nail trimming every couple of weeks.
