Catahoula Leopard Dog
Overview
The Catahoula Leopard dog was named after an Indian word Choctaw meaning "sacred lake". The Catahoula Leopard dog originated near the Catahoula lake in Louisiana. More than likely they are a product of breeding between Bloodhounds Mastiffs and Greyhounds, but no one knows for certain. They are also known as Catahoula Curs or hog dogs. They are Louisiana's state dog.
They were often used to bring in wild hogs from nearby forests. There is an organization known as the Louisiana Catahoula Cur Association and it was formed in 1976. Another organization dedicated towards this dog was established in 1977 It was called The National Association of Louisiana Catahoulas. These two organizations and many others helped in keeping up with the dogs ability to work and conformation. This was done with clinics, trials, certified testing and even through shows.
Are they aggressive towards people? No! It's all about the training!
The temperament of Catahoula Leopard dogs is great. They are not an aggressive breed towards people whatsoever. Although they may be wary of people they do not know they are not shy. Within a family unit they can be very loving and protective. Male dogs can be somewhat aggressive towards other males to assert dominance. Their temperament can depend on different types of things.
