Catahoula Bulldog
Overview
The Catahoula Bulldog is a cross between Catahoula Leopard Dog and American Bulldog. As it usually goes with mixed breeds, this dogs have some of the best characteristics from both of their parents.
History of the breed
They are very popular in the US, and they have been around for more than 100 years. Catahoula Leopard Dog was mixed with American Bulldog to increase the size of the smaller, but very agile and intelligent Catahoula. Crossing those two made it possible for Catahoula Bulldog to be agile, intelligent, loyal and big enough to be used as a hunting dog. They are also used for cattle hoarding.
Physical description and temperament
Catahoula Bulldog is a medium size dog that weights between 34 and 46 kilograms (75 - 100 pounds). They are 61 to 66 centimeters (24-26 inches) high. Size standards are not very strict, as usually with relatively new cross-breeds. It leaves a very strong and agile body impression.
Catahoula Bulldog temperament suits his appearance. These dogs are very loyal and protective. They are calm and friendly unless their family is in danger. They have a lot of energy that has to be directed carefully in order to have a good and obedient dog. A lot of exercise is required as these dogs are very strong and persistent. They are good with children if trained properly. They can develop undesirable behavior if living in conditions where they are not adequately cared for. In that case, they can become destructive. Training from a very young age will prevent that.
Hair and shedding
Catahoula Bulldog has a short and dense hair. Colors of the coat are various, from white to dark colors. They have no undercoat and the hair is straight. Shedding is not very high and it makes this breed easy to groom. Brushing the dog once a week will keep it clean and odor free. If living indoors it will prevent a lot of hair to be present in the living space. Bath is required 2 times a year. Because of the coat type, this breed should be protected from very cold weather.
Health and Lifespan
Overall they are healthy dogs, less prone to some issues their parents can have. Some of the most common problems that occur are allergies and dry nose. It is an active dog so adequate physical exercise is mandatory to maintain. If not, it could lead to obesity. Catahoula Bulldog lifespan can vary between 10 and 14 years.
