Carpathian Sheepdog
Overview
Carpathian Sheepdog is a very old breed that originates from Romania. As the name suggests it has been used for a livestock guard dog.
History and origin
The ancestors of this breed originated from Mesopotamia. For more than 9000 years they were used as utility dogs for protecting sheep from natural predators. Modern standards for this breed were set in 1934. The breed has been endemic to the region. Until today it stayed almost unchanged and still used for the same purpose.
Appearance and Temperament

Training is mandatory since young age and humans must insert themselves as leaders. They are very protective of their family and good with children. They can be sensitive to strangers. If contained in small places they can become aggressive and destructive.
A lot of physical activity is mandatory for this breed. Carpathian Sheepdog can function well with other dogs but they tend to be dominant. Socialization is one of the most important tasks for the Carpathian Shepard owner. It is not recommended to keep this breed in the apartment without yard access, but if a person can provide a few hours of exercise and activity a day it shouldn't be a problem.
If not used as working dogs they shouldn't be left alone for extended periods of time because they are social and bond to their owners.

Carpathian Sheepdog has a very thick and dense coat and undercoat. Colors vary from very light brown and white to medium and dark grey, usually lighter on sides and under. Brushing but not too often is recommended. If kept indoors shedding could be a problem.
Health and Lifespan
