Boston Terrier
Overview
Do you live in closed apartments and you've been thinking of having a dog as your pet? Most people think that dog breeds are only meant for outdoor activities but there are some that would be loyal companions to you and your kids. One of them is the Boston Terrier. Let's briefly have a look at this breed.
This breed has gained popularity since they were created over a century ago. This is among the rare terrier breeds that originated in America from a place called Boston, Massachusetts as a crossbreed between English bulldog and English terrier. Originally, they were bred to be fighting dogs but gradually they have developed to be gentle and affectionate companions with tuxedo-like markings, something that has earned them the nickname "American gentleman".
Weight
Boston terrier exists in three different weight classes, that is, Under 15 pounds, 15-19 pounds, and 20-25 pounds. Generally, the dogs stand 12-17 inches tall at their shoulder.
Temperament and personality
The breed is affectionate, lively, and intelligent. Sometimes they can be stubborn and therefore consistency and persistence should be part of their training. The dog needs to have early socialization and should be exposed to different people, sounds and sights when they are still young. This helps them to be well-rounded dogs when they grow up. They love being around old people and children and they're very obedient.
Health and nutrition
The dogs are healthy but just like the rest of other breeds, they are prone to certain diseases such as cataracts, cherry eye, heart murmurs, and deafness. They should be served with a half to two and a half cups of high-quality dry food twice daily. They should be fed depending on their ages, sizes, metabolism and their activities. However, they should be monitored so as to avoid being overweight.
Grooming and shedding
They have a smooth and fine coat that comes in three different colors, that is, black, seal, and brindle with all having a white muzzle and a face blaze. They are easy to groom and all you need is brushing them weekly with a firm bristle brush and bathing them with dry powdered shampoo. Boston terrier sheds minimally and therefore you can control it by brushing regularly.
Lifespan and exercises
These dogs don't need a lot of frequent exercises since they are relatively inactive indoors and best suits apartments or places that don't have a yard. They enjoy walking with you and handles cold/heat very well. They have a life expectancy of around 12 to 15 years.
