Basset Bleu de Gascogne
Overview
These hound dogs have a long rich history in Southwest France. They are said to be originated from the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. In France at this time, hunting was very popular among rich nobility. They rode on horseback to chase after game, so they needed a long-legged dog to keep up with them. But after the French Revolution, common people began hunting more. They could not afford horses, so they needed a breed of hound dog that would run slower to make it easier to keep up. Thus the Basset Bleu de Gascogne was bred in the 14th century.
Temperament
The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is a very gentle breed. Owners have reported that they are loving, loyal and super gentle dogs considering their original breeding for hunting. These bassets will quickly become lazy lap dogs if left to it. It is recommended to do exercise every day to keep them active, healthy, and a good weight. This exercise does not have to be extreme. A light walk around the block, a quick jog, or even a good game of fetch is all that they require.
Training is also an easy thing to accomplish. They are easy going and will learn at their own pace. But, they are very treat-motivated. Starting at a young age is recommended to keep their minds active. They also are easy to train with nose work classes. This will give them the opportunity to use their incredible sense of smell in positive fun ways.
Bleu Lifespan Expectancy
The Bleu is a medium-sized dog with a lifespan of 12-13 years. You can keep your dog in good health by regular exercise, good quality food, and regular health and dental check-ups. These dogs are very prone to becoming overweight since they are so laid back. You can prolong their life by keeping weight in check. If you keep a happy healthy dog, 13 or more years will be an easy achievement. In general, they are a healthy breed with few health issues.
Grooming and Shedding
Basset Bleu de Gascogne has a short dense coat. They typically go through a seasonal shedding period. During this time you will want to brush your dog with a shed preventing brush daily. Otherwise, they are easy to maintain with little grooming necessary. Baths when needed and frequent nail trims are all that you will need to keep your Basset Bleu de Gascogne looking clean and fresh.
