Ariege Pointer
Overview
Ariege Pointer was initially developed in the Areige region, which is in south-western France. This breed is also known as Braque du Midi or Braque de I'Ariege. These dogs are primarily used as hunter dogs, not as pets or for shows. They are suitable for all kinds of hunting. Ariege pointers are even considered as the national heritage of France.
Characteristics
Ariege Pointers are highly energetic, robust, skilled retrievers, very agile and has excellent sense of smell. They are normally proportioned, has a sleek look with elongated head, overlapping lips, almond eyes, sturdy legs which helps them to run at high speed and has drop ears, They have a broad chest which gradually slims down towards waist.
Ariege Pointers have short shiny and close fitting coat. The primary coat is usually white in color and has patches of orange, fawn or brown color. Their tail is thin, long and hangs straight downwards. Ariege Pointers have short memory span.
Temperament
Ariege pointers love to be active and stay busy all the time. They are loyal to their owners and are playful with children and other dogs. They are jovial, loving and obedient. Ariege Pointers are very independent and hence needs regular training. They need regular vigorous walk or a jog, at least for an hour everyday. As Ariege Pointers are highly energetic and active all the time, they need plenty of space to run and play. They are incredibly fit and speedy, and they thrive when active. They need to be given tasks to complete to make them feel content.
Training
Ariege Pointers are often considered to be hard to train because of their low intelligence and memory span. Their training can be started with basic stop, sit, halt , from its puppy stage. Ariege Pointers need to be trained well in order to ward off erratic behavior which comes with its hunting instincts.
Never be rude to them during training and give them treats as they progress and whenever they listen to your instructions. They show good respect to a decent trainer. Ariege Pointers need to be leash trained and teach them to accept it happily.
Lifespan
Areige Pointers have an average lifespan of 10-15 years. Some of them might even live 2-3 years more than the expected lifespan.
Shedding
Ariege Pointers are considered to be less shedding dog breeds. They need a very little grooming as they don't shed much. Areige pointers almost score 0 on a scale of 5, for grooming needs. Regular brushing would suffice.
