English Shepherd
Overview
The English Shepherd comes originally from England. He looks similar to other herding breeds like collies and shepherds. He came to the US along with the European settlers and spread there widely. He was often used as a farm dog.
English Shepherds are a medium-sized breed of herding dogs. They're known for their intelligence, kindness, and obedience. They often display strong herding instincts but are also suitable for city life with the proper training.
Temperament
The English Shepherd requires daily activity, proper training, and a firm hand. If he's not kept active, he can become unruly and cause problems to his owner. He does great as a watchdog, but he also excels at guarding the kids or property. He's quite easy to train and kind to children and other animals.
Size and appearance
The English Shepherd usually weighs around 40-60 pounds. His fur can be black, white, and yellow or a combination of these colors. You can also find other variations, but they're not as widespread. He sheds frequently and requires regular grooming. That means he's not an ideal breed for people who dislike finding fur all over their house.
Living conditions
The English Shepherd prefers having a lot of free space to move around, preferably a large yard. He can be kept in an apartment, but will still demand daily activity outside. Potential owners should be prepared to take him outside for at least an hour a day or hire someone to walk him for them.
Lifespan and health problems
English Shepherds usually live 12-15 years. They can be subject to some genetic mutations. It is best to have your dog tested in order to find out about these and try to prevent them early. The most common problem can be hip or elbow displacement. Some can also carry the MDR1 gene that causes increased sensitivity to various drugs. Administration of those drugs could result in death if the gene is present.
Puppies
The English Shepherd's litter size is usually 5-8 with an average of 6 puppies. The average puppy price is between $800 - $1000 USD. They can be hard to find in some parts of the world. When buying puppies make sure to choose a reliable seller.
Puppies shouldn't leave their mother until they're at least 8 weeks old. This ensures that they get proper socialization. Pups also have to be exposed to humans, otherwise, they can become shy or even fearful of humans.
