English Cocker Spaniel
Overview
The English Cocker Spaniel has been around for centuries and said to have originated from England in the late 1500s and has seven different breeds, namely the Sussex, Field, English Springer, Welsh Springer, Irish Water Spaniel, Clumber, and Cocker Spaniel. Though the latter considered the same breed but a different variety. These two differ in so many ways such as the size, coat, height, and weight.
English Cocker Spaniel is a breed of dogs that is energetic and will need a lot of exercise. Due to their energetic nature, they need to be put on a leash during walks because they tend to run off and hunt since this breed possesses excellent hunting abilities. They are also good at retrieving things, a good companion dog, watchdog, hunting dog, and show dog.
Temperament
The English Cocker Spaniel has a good temperament that includes a very loving nature. They are a playful, friendly and happy breed.
English Cocker Spaniel temperament also includes being well-behaved, affectionate, and quiet. They are known to be loyal to their family, but somewhat reserved with other people they are not familiar with. But as with other dogs, proper socialization and training that includes obedience always ensure a dog with no bad habits nor aggression towards others.
Lifespan
An English Cocker Spaniel can be a companion for 12 years with a lifespan of up to 15 years, so long as it is healthy. Various factors can change their lifespan as this breed has its health issues both general and minor in nature. They are prone to some conditions which can affect their overall health. Neuropathy, Nephropathy, and nerve problems are the general health issues this breed may encounter. Some minor concerns include eye and hip problems as they age and so with other dogs. The breed is also prone to ear infection, matting and tangles due to their long fur, so it should always be well-maintained and groomed regularly.
Keeping them well-fed with a nutritious diet as well as giving them enough exercise like walking, and short hikes will keep them healthy and will trim the tendency for them to be obese and overweight.
English Cocker Spaniel owners can still enjoy plenty of years with them. As long as they will be mindful of the general condition they are in, keeping their needs in check, and having a keen eye will surely help in preventing any health concerns that may arise in the future. As always, prevention is the key to keeping your dog in topmost shape.
