Drever
Overview
The Drever is a purebred scenthound from Sweden. Due to its keen sense of smell, it is normally used for hunting deer, roe deer, rabbit, boar, racoons, and foxes. In Sweden it is used more for a hunting hound than a pet. However, in other places in the world it is considered a loyal and loving family dog besides being a spectacular endurance hunter. They are fast runners with a lot of stamina that can track and trail various prey for long distances towards the hunter. They have a strong work ethic.
The Drever is descended from a German hound called Westphalian Dachsbracke. It was bred in Sweeden because hunting deer was very difficult in the late 19th century and early 20th century (especially because of the topography and herd location). The first Drevers were first registered with the Swedish Kennel Club in 1913. The name Drever was chosen in a contest in 1947 to disttinguished a well established Swedish line.
It is a small dog (normally from 11 to 16 inches tall) with a long body and short legs. It has short fur and its can be of any color (especially black or fawn) with white markings in the tain, feet, face, and neck. It has the tipical hanging ears of a hound and a long tail. It weighs from 32 to 34 pounds. It can have from 4 to 9 new born puppies. It is suited for most climates. It can cost from $600 to $800 US dollars.
People commonly mistake the Drever for a Beagle, Dachshund, or Basset because of their common features.
Temperament
It is alert, friendly, even tempered, keen and self-assured. Its breed characteristics are: friendly with children, appartment friendly, friendly with cats, very adaptable, grooming, intelligent, trainable, and excellent watchdog. It is neither aggressive nor shy.
Lifespan and lifestyle
Its lifespan is from 12 to 14 years. Drevers should be fed high-quality dry food that is made for dogs of their size. You should not overfeed them to prevent obesity. They are basically work dogs. They can adapt to a family life as pets and create strong bonds with the member of the family, but they will need to exercise.
They require a long daily walk and a small to medium-sized fenced yard to play. Do not let the dog go outside without your supervision. These dogs are intelligent and respond well to training. They can be good watch dogs, but their size does not make them very threatening.
Shedding
The Drever sheds a lot. Regular grooming can partially control the shedding. It needs regular brushing and a bath whenever necessary.
