Croatian Sheepdog
Overview
If you are looking for a strong, well-built dog with a shiny black coat, then you are describing a Croatian sheepdog. Croatian sheepdogs are known for their strength, hardworking nature and adaptability. Weighing at an average of 40 pounds and a height of around 18 inches, Croatian sheepdogs can be trained for a variety of activities that take advantage of their physical agility such as herding and hunting.
Since early times, Croatian sheepdogs have been exclusively bred in Croatia hence their name, something which has also allowed them to have a consistent appearance and genetic characteristics across generations. Selective breeding of these species started in the mid-20th century, which contributed to the currently defined characteristics such as strength, agility and speed.
They are virtually weatherproof and will rarely be affected by many environmental discomforts. Croatian sheepdogs do not shed as much hair and can be classified as average shedders, needing only the occasional brushing and combing for grooming.
Temperament
Croatian sheepdogs might not be the go-to dogs for the casual pet lover, and their high energy and strong-willed nature makes them unsuitable for first-time dog owners who are just looking for an adorable pet which is simple to care for. Their affection level, pet and kid-friendliness could be described as medium. Croatian sheepdogs are some of the most active and alert dogs you will ever meet.
Coupled with their high intelligence and inquisitiveness, Croatian sheepdogs will demand extra exercise and physical activity to expend the extra energy. This also means that Croatian sheepdogs need extra attention as well to prevent any destructive behaviour. When walking them, it is advisable that they walk behind you as you lead them.
Furthermore, in cases where they do not receive enough physical activity, they tend to develop problem behaviours that might affect their health. They can also be aggressive and tend to bark a lot as well. This can be an inconvenience in some cases but it, however, makes them very good watchdogs, as you can take full advantage of their loyalty and intelligence and train them in a wide range of instructions and purposes.
Lifespan
The high energy and active lifestyle of Croatian sheepdogs make them some of the healthiest breeds of dogs. They are an old breed, and selective breeding has allowed them to develop healthy characteristics that can allow them to live up to 14 years. Adequate activity, good diet and care can guarantee longer lifespans. However, the owner also needs to watch out for the high risk of injuries that they can get during herding and hunting, which can put their lives at risk.
