Caravan Hound
Overview
Caravan hound is also known as Mudhol Hound. It is an Indian dog breed. In some parts of India it is used as a hunting and guarding dog. This breed originates from Central Asia and Arabia and has been brought to India few centuries ago. The breed owes its name to the caravans of people traveling while dogs accompanied them.
Appearance and Temperament
Caravan Hound has very elegant and sleek appearance. Narrow and long head, thin neck and slender body. They look very agile and fast at first sight. Height can vary between 66 and 74 centimeters (26-29 inches) for males and 55 to 66 centimeters (23-26) inches) for males. Weight should be between 22 and 28 kilograms. Although high, the Caravan Dog is not as heavy so it can be considered as medium-large dog.
Endurance is one of their qualities. As working dogs they can run and navigate in different terrains and are very valuable hunting companions. Caravan Hounds are very loyal and protective dogs. They need a lot of exercise and that is one of the reasons they are not ideal for apartments. They do not like to be touched, except if you are the owner. Caravan dogs are not friendly to strangers.
They can be kept around small children but small animals should be avoided. Socialization is required from young age. Owners should be aware of its temperament and be strict and persistent, but also respectful in order to train the Caravan Dog. Their hunting instincts are strong. In some cases they tend to be disobedient so caution is mandatory when walking in populated areas. If not treated properly they can become aggressive and very disobedient and behavior is not easy to correct. Caravan dog is not suitable for an average pet owner.
Coat and Shedding
Coat is short, straight and smooth with no undercoat and it is ideal for warm and dry regions. Caravan Hounds are very sensitive to low temperatures and if kept in cold areas they should be protected by dog vests/jackets. Colors are various and all are accepted. Shedding is not very high and no grooming except occasional brushing is required.
Health and Lifespan
Caravan Hound does not have any known genetic diseases or common health problems. Proper nutrition and physical activity are crucial to maintain a healthy life. Because of the size some hip dysplasia can sometimes occur so the owner should keep that in mind. Life expectancy is 10-15 years.
