Overview

Canaan Dog is a medium-sized dog, sturdy and strong. Very like wild dogs. According to the FCI standard, it belongs to dogs of primitive type.

This breed is a stray dog that has survived in the desert region of Israel for thousands of years. In Europe and North America, today they are companion dogs and compete in sports disciplines that need coherence, agility, and obedience.

The oldest remains of these dogs 10,000 years ago found in caves in Israel. In the Sinai Desert, there is a carved rock from the first to the third century BCE that painted a dog that looks like a Canaan Dog.

Canaan Dog we know today has bred since the 1930s when Israeli dog expert, Dr. Rudolphina Menzel, started a selective breeding program in Jerusalem. She is also responsible to preserve this race.

For thousands of years, dogs of this breed lived wandering the deserts and virtues of the Middle East, and then assisted the Bedouins in guarding the flock of sheep. In recent years, the Canaan Dog around the world has proven to be excellent in the military and police, a helper in the search and rescue of people, mine detection and a guide to the blind.

Temperament

The Canaan Dog has a strong instinct for survival. It is responsive and distrustful of strangers, responding with loud barking to any harassment, which makes this dog an excellent keeper. This dog is loyal and gentle to children but can be aggressive towards other dogs or smaller animals.

This breed is loyal, gentle, kind and dedicated to its human family. Canaan Dog is enthusiastic, intelligent, and agile. This is a dog of strong will, so it needs a consistent owner with experience. It is not demanding and adapts to all living conditions and all temperatures. Thanks to high intelligence, inexhaustible energy, and fiery temperament, it needs a lot of physical and mental stimulation through play and learning.

If you want to have a Canaan Dog as a pet, know that this dog loves to dig and barking is his main means of communication and the way he shows that danger or threat is approaching.

The lifespan of Canaan Dog

  • This breed has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years.
  • Canaan Dog is of good health and is not subject to known hereditary problems.

Shedding

The outer fur is thick, sharp and straight, of short or medium length. The color range is from black to cream, including all shades of brown to red, usually with small white spots, or white with patches of a different color.
