Overview
Are you considering having a pet? One of the loyal friend/companions that you can have around your house is a dog. Over the years, different breeds have been produced. Some are as a result of breeding dogs from the same ancestors while others from mixed.
This has led to a wide appearance with different speciation. Dogs can be categorized as either, companion, herd, guard or working dogs. Let's look at one of the breeds that's known as Belgian Tervuren which is not only beautiful but also very brave and protective of his family thus making him the right candidate for being a companion and also a watchdog.
The breed originated from a farming village in Belgium called Tervuren. Belgian Tervuren has gradually developed to be an all-purpose dog and during the 19th century, his protective nature and herding skills proved this breed to be an asset to his family as well as farmers.
Temperament
This is an intelligent, loving, and a companion dog that bonds closely to his owner and is very protective of them. As long as they are engaged in lots of exercises, they become calm and relax well in their home. If these dogs are bored, they start to chew belongings, barking, and at times chews on themselves. This means that they shouldn't be left by themselves/alone for a long time.
Training
It's an intelligent dog that loves showing off what they can do. They do well in herding, obedience, breed ring, and agility trials. Belgian Tervuren enjoys training sessions especially if his trainer is assertive, kind, and with yummy treats.
Nutrition and weight
Since this is an active dog, it needs to feed with a high-quality diet according to his activity level. The best food would be dry foods in order to protect them from oral diseases such as carries, gum diseases and bad breath which are caused by feeding on wet foods. They weigh between 40-70 pounds and stands between 21-26.5 inches tall.
Shedding, grooming, and lifespan
It has a long and thick top coat that protects it from the cold. The dog requires to be bathed once in each season unless it sticks in dirty places like in mud. Brush it once daily or twice weekly if you're too much occupied. It sheds constantly throughout the year and has a life expectancy of around 10-12 years.
Health problems
Some of the most common health issues are the elbow and hip dysplasia. Therefore, keep the puppies away from slippery floors and jumping on and off the furniture.
