Basenji
Overview
Originating in central Africa, the Basenji's were used as hunting dogs but is now recognized by kennel clubs and classifying them as a hound (sighthound). They are small, graceful dogs that would help hunters by flushing small animals from thick overgrowth into nets. They also aided in controlling rodent problems in the villages. They are widely known for being a barkless dog due to their unusually shaped larynx and rather they chortle or yodel (Baroo) instead.
Temperament
Basenji's are scrappy little dogs that are loyal, smart and eager to please their owner. Since they love their humans, they can be very affectionate. However, they can also be independent and stubborn, so it is important to establish leadership with your Basenji.
These high-spirited and extremely curious dogs need regular exercise to not get bored and become destructive. Remember to keep Basenji's on a leash due to them being swift and agile and if they get loose, they will be hard to catch. Lastly, even though they don't bark, they can still alarm you if they see something they don't like.
Appearance
Classified as a small breed, Basenji's can range from 22-24 lbs and 16-17 inches tall. They have a wrinkled forehead, erect ears and a tightly curled tail. They can be a wide variety of colors such as; brindle, black, tri-color, tan, black/white and red. Their coats being short and fine plus they are excellent at grooming themselves makes it where shedding is usually not a problem.
Life Span and Health
The average life span of Basenji's are around 13-14 years and are considered generally healthy dogs. Due to their high energy and agility they could have problems with their joints and hips. Other things to watch out for is; hypothyroidism, inflammatory bowel disease and kidney disorders. There are tests available to check your basenji for any genetic disorders.
Fun Facts
- They are possibly the worlds oldest dog. They have been seen on ancient Egyptian wall paintings.
- Basenji's hunted lions. Ok, they don't actually attack the lions but would rather chase them out of their dens.
- They are considered "catlike", as mentioned before, owners do not have to do a lot of grooming as they will clean their paws and coats themselves.
- They don't like the dark. They were primarily used during the day-time hours and the dark can make them nervous and un-easy. Basenji's have a long history of being great hunters but also amazing pets. These energetic, poised little dogs can make a great addition to any family.
