American Hairless Terrier
Overview
American hairless terrier is one of the rare breed of dogs that directly descended from Rat Terrier. It was granted full recognition as a separate type of breed in the year 2004. The story of this small dog began in 1972 when the first puppy was born in a litter of rat terriers that belonged to Eddie and Willie Scott.
They named the puppy Josephine who now became the mother of the entire breed. The Rare breed Terrier has the appearance of Rat Terrier which developed from a European Terrier known as Feists. Feists was a cross breed of Beagles, Miniature Pinschers and Greyhounds. AHT makes a great companion to many dog owners.
Its characteristics matches those of other Terriers. It is an energetic, intelligent and generally social breed of dogs.curiosity of the highest order but very easy to train. It demonstrates It is the best example of a pet to animal lovers who suffers from different allergies. Like many small dogs breed, the can be destructive around your home if proper leadership is not demonstrated by the owner.
Temperament
AHT is very intelligent, playful and very alert. Children get along well with them for they are very loving breed. Just like other terries, they possess fearlessness and determination of serving well as guard dogs. They play a lot, love digging and chasing games. These are the characteristics that a pet owner should keep in mind while acquiring this breed. Maintaining them can be quite a task that only passionate pet owner can hack.
Life Span American Hairless Terriers can live as long as 16 years
They rarely suffer from diseases having very few genetic health problems. Due to their hairlessness gene being recessive, they do not suffer from health and skin complications that affect other hairless animals. Just make sure that they are well taken care of during the changing seasons. Have them sunscreened during summer and kept warm during winter.
Shedding
The American hairless Terriers come in both coated and hairless types. The hairless tend to have whiskers and eyebrows. The coated ones have short shiny coat on them. The hairless variety has a smooth skin that feels warm when you touch. The heads of the two variety is broad and edge shaped. The hairless breed is hypoallergenic variety but have their own challenges as well. Sunburns during hot seasons and needs special care during cold times. They have erect V-shaped years with shiny and curious eyes.
